The 3 Fundamentals from Models: How to Track Honest Living, Action & Communication
Mark Manson's Models rests on three fundamentals: Honest Living, Honest Action, and Honest Communication. Understanding them is one thing. Tracking your progress is another. Without measurement, you're guessing. With a simple tracker, you can see what's improving, what's stuck, and where to focus. This guide gives you a framework for tracking all three, and a template you can use weekly.
Why Tracking Matters
Most men read Models, feel inspired, then drift. They might work on one fundamental for a week, forget the others, and wonder why nothing changes. The three fundamentals are interconnected. Neglect Honest Living, and Honest Action becomes needier. Neglect Honest Communication, and Honest Action becomes ambiguous. Tracking forces you to attend to all three and spot patterns over time.
The Honest Living Scorecard (1-10)
Rate each area weekly. Be honest, this is for you, not for show.
| Area | This Week | Notes | |------|-----------|-------| | Health & Fitness | /10 | Exercise, sleep, nutrition | | Career & Purpose | /10 | Meaningful work, growth | | Social Life | /10 | Friends, community, connection | | Hobbies & Interests | /10 | Fun, curiosity, passion | | Living Environment | /10 | Space you're proud of | | Values Alignment | /10 | Actions match stated values | | Self-Investment | /10 | Energy toward self vs. seeking validation |
Overall Honest Living Score: Average of the seven. Track weekly. Look for trends, not perfection.
The Honest Action Tracker
Honest Action = acting despite fear. Track two things: (1) what you did, (2) anxiety before/after.
Weekly Log Template:
- Action: What did you do? (e.g., "Asked for her number")
- Anxiety Before (0-10): How nervous were you?
- Anxiety After (0-10): How did you feel afterward?
- Outcome: What happened? (Outcome matters less than action, you're tracking courage, not results.)
Goal: 3-5 Honest Actions per week. Start small. Graduate gradually. The number matters less than consistency.
The Honest Communication Checklist
Honest Communication = expressing intent clearly, without games. Track: Did you say what you wanted? Or did you hint, hope, or avoid?
Weekly Checklist:
- [ ] Expressed interest when I felt it (at least once)
- [ ] Made a clear ask (date, number, second meeting)
- [ ] Accepted her response without neediness (no pushing, no sulking)
- [ ] Avoided ambiguous "maybe" language when I meant "yes" or "no"
Common slip: Saying "we should hang out sometime" instead of "I'd like to take you to dinner Friday. Are you free?" The first is safe but unclear. The second is Honest Communication.
Integrating the Three
The fundamentals reinforce each other. Honest Living reduces neediness, you have a life, so her response matters less. Honest Action builds courage, you act despite fear, so fear shrinks. Honest Communication polarizes, she knows where you stand, so you attract compatible women and filter incompatible ones.
Weekly Integration Question: Which fundamental felt weakest this week? That's your focus for next week.
